So what if ad agencies call the job an “Art Director”. What Art will I be directing? Will it be original, thought provoking or avent-garde?
Karen Berndt at VCU told me that to be successful at the Brandcenter, I would need work on my typography and layout skills. No offense Karen, but I disagree.
I’m not saying that a portfolio of work that i threw together in three months was good by any means, it was crap… worse than that, it was… well, lets just say my computer crashed and I didn’t bother to excavate the files from the hard drive. What I need to work on is, well - ART. Pure and simple, unadulterated, art.
Karen told me to look at award-winning ads like the One Show, for inspiration, and an idea of what her school is looking for in their students. That’s great, and I have been looking at ads… but what I keep seeing looks less like art and more like a “For Sale” sign.
Can advertising be art? I am still undecided, but it is my goal to make art, and maybe in the process of creating, the ads will come.
